Whatever the business, managers, leaders, and administrators in the company have to make difficult decisions every day. Sometimes, these officers seek counsel from a trusted employee, fellow leader, or even a friend or higher power. In most cases, however, gathering data is the first choice used by most business arenas. All of these methods can result in good outcomes, but often the best way to determine an answer to your puzzle is by using your natural “gut feeling.”
What is meant by that? Although humans use both logic and emotion when making decisions, they often use intuition, or feelings, to find the way to conclusions. But, according to Geil Browning, Founder, and CEO of Emergenetics International:
Going with our gut implies uncertainty and does not guarantee a good outcome. If we rely on logic and all the authentic information we need is right in front of us, we do not have to depend on our guts. When the evidence is sketchy, using your gut instincts gives you over a 50/50 success rate.
In the same way that football players hone their skills on the field through many hours of practice, we can increase our intuitive powers by giving our brains more emotional data gathered from experience, knowledge, and professional encounters. By doing so, our minds will eventually soak-up enough examples to tune-up our gut reactions.
Gary Vaynerchuk, CEO of VaynerMedia, says that at the beginning of his career, there was no information creating guidelines because the industry was in its infancy. This fact meant that all his business decisions had to be “guessed” or “projected.” He adds that he was able to reach his level of achievement because of his well-tuned intuition.
Those in the nonprofit world need to use their intuition continually. In the helping professions, it is crucial to know that gut-feelings are not baseless. It is our previous experiences and the information we gather that make following our instincts work. Simon T. Bailey, writing for BizJournals, says:
Decisions are not about going out on a limb and braving the consequences just because you want to blindly trust your hunch. They are about combining your inner wisdom with the knowledge of systematic and scientific data to make the best decisions.
